toronto rock, that is! i missed out on the drunken lacrosse outing last year, and i've been hearing some rumblings in support of organizing the 2nd annual GTGtPAWA rock your socks off*. who's up for it? our options are:

feb 10/06 - versus rochester
feb 24/06 - versus philidelphia
mar 03/06 - versus minnesota (toronto versus a whole state?!)
mar 25/06 - versus calgary

tickets are $22 - $57, although i'm guessing we'll be going for the cheap seats. phone lines are open, folks. what do you think?

I know this isn't really outing related, but since the last posting has been there since August, I figured you'd read just about anything by now. So here it is.

Let me preface this by saying that I know Alan and I are bad parents. Last night we were watching Corner Gas and Oscar (who is Paige's favourite tv character) was talking. For a couple of weeks she has already been mimicking him when he says, "Stop it" and it's really funny. It's a really deep, raspy grunt not befitting of a dainty 19 month old at all. Well last night in between bites of chicken primavera, she picked up another of his favourite words. Jackass. But it was more like "Jack...ass". At first Alan and I thought she said jacket, but then we realized what she was saying (and this is where we fail all the Dr. Phil tests) and we started killing ourselves laughing. And the more we laughed, the more she said it.

But as quick as it started, she let it go again and she never said it again all night. And then my proudest moment as a mother ever came. Paige threw a temper tantrum and wouldn't go to bed without her calculator. There's hope for her yet. I'm not sure about Alan and I.

So, yhea, ever since the addition of little B to our family, I've been both silent and absent of the GTGt. Thinking lots 'bout you lot, though, and in the spirit of...well, spirits I suppose, I've been carrying on my own little GTGtPAWA at home. But, never fear--I've at least waited until Nora's in bed before coiffing frosty libations. Not quite the same, though.

But you know, should all'y'all ever decide to have pawa 'round Bloor and Bay-ish area, I could maybe swing by for a pint before making it home. It is, after all, getting to the end of patio season...
I'm sure you all understand how it would be a bit gauche for me to go out swilling when my lovely and dedicated wife is at home with the wee birn. Nevertheless, 'been missing it, you know? Will check back for check ups.

I don't recall any GTGtPAWA sanctioned events at private dwellings, and I can pretty much guarantee that none of them have occurred north of Hwy 7, but I'm going out on a limb here and thinking that most of you would abandon even your most sacred rules to get into a swimming pool this weekend. For those of you who still find Aurora a little 905 for your liking, I'm sure that the YMCA is adding extra chemicals to the pool these days to account for all the kids who aren't toilet trained yet and who's parents won't shell out the $1.10 for Little Swimmer Diapers.

The offer is simple: BYOB, BYOM. That would be meat, for anyone who is above/opposed to eating hamburgers and hot dogs.

House rules:

Clothing is mandatory (at least until the children and Alan's parents go home). Speedos of any kind will subject you to mockery of the highest caliber. Wear at your own risk.

Don't give beer to the baby. Sure it's funny to watch her stumble around the yard telling off-coloured jokes, but then she brings home strange men and ends up with poorly done tattoos. If you must find a way to amuse yourself, feel free to throw laxatives over the fence at the neighbour's dog.

Please refrain from playing with the power tools. Saws (mitre, reciprocal, circular and jig), routers, drills and compressors are all fun to look at, but pose a high risk of personal injury when one is intoxicated, scantily clad, and attempting to balance a paper plate with 5 bean salad in the other hand. For those who insist on losing an arm or a leg this weekend, we will set up a Texas Hold'em table.

Its been a while since anyone has posted anything new so I thought I'd fix that (I'm not even sure if anyone still checks the blog but we'll see!). A friend of mine is in a band (The Golden Dogs) who'll be playing at Lee's Palace on June 11th with the Rheostatics and 54-40, and at The Rivoli on July 8th with the Spades. I thought I'd go to one of the concerts and wanted to know if anyone else wanted to come along. Let me know if you do and which date you'd prefer (the one at Lee's Palace is $20). Oh, and Karen, Danny Michel is at the Rivoli on June 16/17th.

To commemorate the ever-so welcome return of spring, the ever-so welcome approach of moped season and the ever-so unwelcome changing of the clocks (YOU AREN'T SAVING ANY FUCKING DAYLIGHT, ASSHOLES, SO STOP FUCKING MAKING ME RESET EVERY FUCKING CLOCK IN MY FUCKING HOUSE JUST SO YOU CAN PLAY YOUR FUCKING GOLF UNTIL 10 O'FUCKINGCLOCK (end rant)), I propose we have a beer. Or three. Or five. Whatever it takes, really.

Let us drink to the warmth of the sun. Let us drink to the 5 months worth of garbage that is no longer hidden under the snow. Let us drink to the mud on my car. Most of all, let us drink to patios. Big patios with gas heaters and Labbatt Blue umbrellas. Little patios with plastic tables that flex under the weight of frothy pitchers of beer. Patios that aren't really patios at all, but are actually parking lots with small fences around them. Patios crawling with smokers who finally have a place to sit when they leave the bar for a smoke. Patios full of optimistic people who can finally wear the skimpy clothes they bought on sale over the winter that are not quite warm enough for April but who, as true Canadians wear them and their goosebumps proudly. I am the Easter Bunny

I never intentionally set out to become the Easter Bunny, but here I am. I guess it all started 13 months ago when Paige was born. See I did purposefully (and most robustly I might add) set out to become a mom, but much like acquiring a cell phone, you must then sign up for a package to manage said new acquisition.

With so many plans to choose from, we ultimately went with the VIP Holiday Bundle. It does cost a little more, but it allows me to concurrently coexist not only as Mom, but also The Easter Bunny, The Tooth Fairy, Santa Claus and the less observed, but fun non-the-less Nancy New Year. I am also licensed to go over-board in any of, but not limited to the following events: Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day and Halloween. Certainly there was a basic package, the Jehovah’s Witness Economy Pack, but it was quite restrictive and required more weekend commitments. Admittedly the Vodka Martini Roam Plan promised more free time for myself, but had foreseeable long-term complications.

She’s not even going to get it for a couple of years. There will be a couple of good years where she just sparkles at the thought of all that stuff, but she’ll never thank me for it. And then eventually she’ll figure it all out and harbour a small resentment for being the reason that she died a little inside that day.

So here it is my lunch hour and I’m heading out to buy chocolate eggs that she’s too young to eat and toys that she’ll ignore by 10 a.m. on Sunday, but that’s what being a parent is all about isn’t it? And if I have to eat every last one of those chocolate eyes by myself, then by God I’m just going to have to do it.

For those of you I have not met, I work with Karen. My real name is Angela Glidden, but I decided that if I was ever going to be a stripper my stage name would by Angel Glitter, so that's what I'm going to go by because let's be honest, how often do you get the opportunity to use your stripper pseudonym for anything?

I'm married and have a 1 year old daughter. I'll try to refrain from describing b.m.'s and such but when she squats down and shakes her grove thing to the Dirty video, I might be forced to share.

I will likely never get the opportunity to attend any of the GTGtPAWA alumni meetings, but if you don't mind, I will live vicariously through you and use my resources to come up with hangover cures for you (since there seems to be a chronic need for it among the group). My other talents include spinning my eyes in circles really really fast and baking the best chocolate chip cookies in the entire universe.

Having attended several of these GTGtPAWA events now, I sometimes wonder what it would be like to got out and drink with civilized people. Perhaps it’s the group dynamic, perhaps it’s the combination of various alcoholic substances imbedded. However our little ‘crew’ is unable to simply attend an event. We must put our stamp on that mofo.

Case in point: Dean’s show on Saturday night. I imagine if most people were attending their manager’s show, they’d arrive early, drink sparingly and clap politely. They wouldn’t, for example see the rush of the cougars to the dance floor as a personal challenge. Linda, clearly exhibiting sharing issues (likely stemming from childhood I’d imagine!), wrestled control from the cougars, sent them back to their seats, and declared this place ours. This in turn set up a waltz number as an opportunity for Karen and I to give birth to a shapeless and rhythm-less interpretative dance in front of 50 odd people. There was a brief attempt by the locals to reclaim their club, however in an act of barely concealed aggression, we turned the slow song set into a battlefield, flinging partners wildly in at the opposition. When they limped off to lick their wounds, we (still full of blood lust... and liquor) continued to throw partners, into each other.

Suddenly the reasons why they wouldn’t run us a tab seem pretty clear.

I can't believe more people think Nerd over Geek. This is disgraceful and I must now pull out the big guns to prove my point. A quick meta analysis of studies on the topic proves my thesis: A Nerd is a Geek who can't get laid.

Like any other rapidly researched rant, let me begin in the style of "Webster's defines X as..."

The Jargon Lexicon includes this in its definition of geek:

Originally, a geek was a carnival performer who bit the heads off chickens. (In early 20th-century Scotland a geek was an immature coley, a type of fish.) Before about 1990 usage of this term was rather negative. Earlier versions of this lexicon defined a computer geek as one who eats (computer) bugs for a living an asocial, malodorous, pasty-faced monomaniac with all the personality of a cheese grater. This is often still the way geeks are regarded by non-geeks, but as the mainstream culture becomes more dependent on technology and technical skill mainstream attitudes have tended to shift towards grudging respect. Correspondingly, there are now geek pride festivals (the implied reference to gay pride is not accidental).

While a nerd is defined thusly:
1. [mainstream slang] Pejorative applied to anyone with an above-average IQ and few gifts at small talk and ordinary social rituals.
(emphasis mine)

Delving further into the topic using the official repository of the sum-total of human knowledge it is plain to see that anyone who votes nerd is clearly a dork.

The discussion here concludes that nerds take their geekiness to such an extreme that they lose all social skills. The conclusion: nerds wear pocket protectors; geeks have friends (best line:a geek is a nerd with social skills. A geek is a nerd who knows more than three people. A geek is a nerd who can hold is own liquor).

In this debate, they maintain the idea that a nerd is a geek with possibly more skill in the field but again, no social graces. They also add the concept of a dork, which is purely derogative -- more of a wannabe geek/nerd. The general idea here is that a dork tries too hard to be either a geek or a nerd but just lacks the brainpower. Nerds try to move beyond their nerdiness to escape or elevate their field, but are held back -- perhaps as a result of too much focus on the field or just desire to not associate with anyone outside the field. Geekdom implies some pride in the status. Because they accept and relish the label, they tend not worry about being called geeks and are more successful. This is perhaps because Geek has become the new cool while nerd is still seen as somewhat derogatory.

Another discussion here expands on a geek's contentedness with her status as a geek while nerds aspire -- unsuccessfully usually due to the afore mentioned lack of social skills -- to become something other than a nerd (out of desire to finally have sex?).

One interesting point is the ability to simultaneously be a geek, a nerd and a dork in different fields. For example: I am a computer geek, a Canadian Football nerd and a car dork.

A good lexicographer will allow common usage to define a term rather than imposing an uncomfortable definition on the public. This analysis shows that common usage points to a geek's social superiority over a nerd. Obviously, without a major credit card, social skills are required to get laid. A geek can potentially possess these skills but a nerd, by definition, cannot.

As for which category this post puts me into -- I'll leave that one up to the judges

I think we need to discuss some important, non-beer-related issues on this site and this is perfect one to start with....the U.S. Supreme Court rejected a constitutional challenge to an Alabama law that makes it a crime to sell sex toys. The law prohibits the distribution of "any device designed or marketed as useful primarily for the stimulation of human genital organs." First-time violators can face a fine of up to $10,000 and as much as one year in jail. The appeals court said it agreed with Alabama that the law exercised time-honored use of state police power to restrict the sale of sex. It rejected the ACLU's argument that the constitutional right to privacy covered the commercial sale of sex toys.

I, for one, along with my 'bunny', am appalled.

Well...I could talk about "go"tards and other similarly stupid people...I mean WTF are they thinking when they just stop at the terminal end of an escalator and stand there gawping around? That there's nobody else in the world but them? And what's the deal the deal with looking at me like that when I yell to "Keep moving, please?" Shit! I'm at least being polite in the way that I'm pointing out how friggin' stupid you are. Is there another more polite way of indicating that you are a moron? Let's try...in the two or so seconds before I collide with your dull-witted bulk I could possibly try "Excuse me, but did you realize that I and the others behind me will need to alight from this continuously moving mechanical uni-directional stairway? Perhaps you could see it in your benificence to kindly relocate so that we may allow you the time to collect your thoughts and plan your next move in peaceful calm." Wow, what poise! What graciousness! But I've timed myself...It takes slightly longer to be polite than "Hey, get outta the way, fucknuts!" Ok, so here's my plan for Thursday. Catch up with me where you can.
I'll be at the Dodger by 4:30ish for a pintish with any downtown-type folk who care to come. By around 5:30 I'm heading homeward along with anyone who has an interest in reality TV porn. There, in addition to watching said porn, we will partake of Karen's cuisine and any beer, wine or munchines that happen to be lying around (or otherwise magically appear) .
